October Skies

All photos in this post are from the last ten days or so.
October so far has been mostly sunny.

CIMG7272

The first two shots were shot around 4 pm, directly against the sun, very low over the horizon that time of day now.

CIMG7275

Actually it does not rise very high even at midday now:

Some days, not a cloud to be seen in the sky:

CIMG7447

Other days, it’s the sun that goes into hiding:

Sunset clouds from my balcony (6 pm on October 11th):

And morning mist lifting the next day around 8:15
(as seen from my kitchen window):

FMTSO/Skywatch: Blowing in the Wind

Today I decided to do a “proper” Friday Shoot Out, i.e. take the camera out for a walk (on Friday afternoon), to see what I could find blowing in the wind.

The “problem” was, there wasn’t that much of a wind…

CIMG6746-001

Often it’s quite windy on my balcony, but today I could even sit out there reading for a while in the afternoon sun, just wearing jeans and short sleeves. Not bad for 20th September.

CIMG6753

Not much for the wind to blow on here! (Don’t ask me why ‘they’ cut everything off this tree. I have no idea. I only noticed it today as I was passing.) As you can see in the background, most trees are still green.

CIMG6756

They’ve added a sandbox to the playground since my last visit to this park. But the sand was not blowing about (and that blue carpet is still staying mysteriously put as well).

CIMG6760-001

Possibly a slight flutter of wind through my hair (?)

CIMG6766-001

One “Painted Lady” did indeed flutter about enjoying the flowers. But she hardly had to struggle against the wind.

CIMG6793-001

The rowan berries are red, but the leaves still green.

CIMG6789-001

Some of the maple trees have started to shift colour just a little…

CIMG6790-001

… but the few leaves dropped were lying rather tidily along the edge of the street. (I’m showing off my new shoes.)

CIMG6783-001

Well, finally I found something blowing in the wind!
(Flags belonging to the local electricity & cable company.)

Now I’m curious what others may have found…

Sky Watch Friday: The Fire-Dragon

CIMG5922-001

On Monday night this week I saw this amazing sunset from my balcony. It looked rather like a fiery dragon!

CIMG5924-001

It made me go out on a late walk around the block to get some additional perspectives of it.

Shadow Shot Sunday

CIMG3119

The glimpses of sun have been rare lately…
Only occasionally do the clouds part for long enough
to remind us of the difference between light and shadow.

Friday My Town – Skylines

“Do you see prairies,  sky scrapers or something in between when you view your skyline?”

CIMG1323-001

The panorama view above is from today – a skyline I get to look at quite often, walking to/from the supermarket.

The closest I come to seeing a ‘prairie’ would be the football field on one side of my building, I suppose – and maybe the tall chimney sticking up may count as sky-scraper?

CIMG1311-001

▲ Misty morning today when I set off out...

▼ Below is the view as I approached home again on my way back from the supermarket. (I chose to go round in a circle today, one way there, and another way back.)

CIMG1339

Having a chimney on the horizon might not seem like a lot of fun – but it can be! (a winter collage from 2010) ▼

Another of my nearby skylines consists of the tall trees in an old cemetery:

From my kitchen window, the skyline looks different depending on the time of year ▼

CIMG1354

In the winter, the view includes buildings that are hidden from me in the summer. Although I prefer the greens of summer … I also like it that I see farther in the winter! ▼

Friday My Town – Get High

… with your camera, as in shoot from above.

CIMG0793-001

Next to our railway station, there is a high rock.
So I decided to do a bit of climbing…

CIMG0785-001

… On second thought, better use the stairs and path!
But I did go up there, and here’s what I saw:

CIMG0765-001

Looking west: The railway station – and a bit beyond…

CIMG0765-002

And a rainbow in the clouds (cut and enlarged from the photo above) – I actually didn’t see that until I got the photos up on the computer!

CIMG0768-001

Zooming in the buildings on the other side of the tracks.

CIMG0763

South: There’s the tornado sculpture from the first photo again. To the right is the “travel centre” for the long distance busses. In the background to the left is a school, and to the right a spectacular triangular office building.

CIMG0777-001

East: Towards the town centre. You can see both church spires in this photo.

CIMG0779-001

Lots of red roofs…

CIMG0757-001

… and other colours, too.

The day after I’d been up to the top of the Rock, I thought of another high place I’d never been to with the digital camera. So off I went… up to the old Water Tower.

CIMG0849-001

Built in 1900 and looking like a little fairy tale castle, surrounded by a little park on the top of a hill.

CIMG0814-001

CIMG0818-001

I’ve been up to the top of the tower once, but it’s not usually open to the public. So the entrance gate is as high as I got this time.

CIMG0830-001

CIMG0829-001

The view downhill towards the town centre.

CIMG0840-001

The other side of the hill.

On my way back downtown, I passed the Gustaf Adolf Church which was built around the same time as the water tower…

CIMG0852

I’ve never been up in the tower…

CIMG0859

… and I didn’t go that high this time either.

CIMG8715-copy-001

But I did go up on the balcony where the big organ is.
