Black-necked Swans

CIMG6720-1

The black-necked swan is not native to Scandinavia or Europe, but comes from South America. However, we have a couple of them in a bird sanctuary in my town. These and other rare birds live within  fences at one end of the lake; while wild birds are free to come and go as they like.

Watery Whatever

CIMG6457-1

Actually, this was Watery Tuesday (27.12), with a glimpse of sun between the rainstorms… Today is Watery Wednesday with the water pouring down from above (again), and the wind rattling the windows (again); all in all a weather for just staying in!

Watery Wednesday: Frozen Puddle

CIMG5939-1

Some of the last autumn leaves blown off the trees in the storm that passed by here on Sunday… Followed by colder weather with a bit of frost here and there on the morning after.

Watery Wednesday: Goldeneye

CIMG5411-1

The most common birds in the river where I live are mallards; but I also keep seeing one Goldeneye, sometimes hanging out with the mallards, but often on his own. Back in the spring he had a mate, but now he appears to be single. Looks a little sad somehow, but perhaps I’m letting my imagination run away with me…

Photo from two weeks ago. The big tree had dropped all its leaves, but the smaller ones had not, which created a special effect.

… ‘Whisper to the Wild Water’ …

For Watery Wednesday

I borrowed the post title – Whisper to the Wild Water -
from a song/album by Maire (Moya) Brennan:

… … …

Around, around
Around I turn
Around I turn
In time

I heard Your name
Whisper to the wild water
I’ll be strong
I will survive

… … …

This is just a very small waterfall…
Still, standing close to it, the other sounds of the city
are drowned by the roar of the water.

Watery Wednesday–Raindrops Keep Falling…

CIMG3451-1

It is a Watery Wednesday indeed. Not sure my camera is waterproof enough for it, so I picked a picture from my archives… Lupin leaves. And just in case you’ve forgotten what the flowers look like, here is a collage to cheer you up and remind you of ‘the greens of summer’:

2010 06 Lupines collage

♫ Now where did that phrase come from… Oh yes:

Kodachrome
You give us those nice bright colors
You give us the greens of summers
Makes you think all the world's a sunny day, oh yeah!
I got a Nikon camera
I love to take a photograph
So Mama, don't take my Kodachrome away

Sea Lions at the Zoo :)

for Water Wednesday

In the summer, the sea lions give daily public shows. I came by their
lake just as the show was over; but the animals were evidently in
the mood to give the public a bit of a “back stage” entertainment.

Watery Wednesday: Flamingos

CIMG2612

Yes, still at the zoo ;) … The flamingos always seem to prefer the corner of their pond farthest away from the public, and in the sharp contrast between light and shadow on the day I was visiting, it was very hard to tell how my attempts to zoom them in would turn out until I got home and got the pictures up on the screen! I’m fascinated by how they can twist their necks like that… (below)

Watery Wednesday: Bird’s-eye View

CIMG2433

Yesterday morning the lake lay still like a perfect mirror.
This view was taken from the top of a birdwatch tower, but there were very few birds about. I happened to run into a friend up there (in the tower) who is an ardent birdwatcher (not just in fine weather!) and he said it was too still for the birds… Most of them prefer a little wind under their wings!
